Army's Gunner Filipowicz named EIWA Wrestler of the Week

Army's Gunner Filipowizc has been named EIWA Wrestler of the Week following two big dual meet victories.

On Friday, Filipowizc won a low scoring bout against Cornell's Louie Cerchio (a top Cornell recruit and former Cadet National Champion at Fargo).  Filipowicz showed strong mat wrestling skills by riding Cerchio for the entire second period then scoring his escape early in the third period. Neither wrestler was able to score a takedown throughout the match and the score ended 2-0 with a riding time point awarded to Fillipowicz at its conclusion.

On Saturday in the home dual meet against Bucknell, No. 16 Filipowicz faced No. 21 Noah Mullvaney. This match was the much anticipated meeting of Mulvaney the No.1 seed at EIWAs last season vs. Filipowicz, the No. 2 seed at last year's EIWAs.  Both Mulvaney and Fllipowicz were injured in last year's EIWA Championships and had to medical default from the tournament (after securing an automatic NCAA bid). Both wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships last year, but were not at 100% and were unable to achieve a placing.

In a tight, intense match Fillipowizc started the second period from the bottom position.  Known as an expert with the Peterson maneuver, Fillipowicz hit the move on Mulvaney and finished the Peterson by going to the head and securing the pin in just 23 seconds!

Gunner has his goals set to be an All-American in 2026. First year Army head coach Troy Nickerson says of Filipowicz, "Gunner is having a tremendous season.  His eagerness to learn and develop as a complete wrestler is exciting.  His competitiveness is hard to match and will certainly help him as he looks to make his first appearance on the NCAA podium come March.
