Cornell junior Yianni Diakomihalis clinched a spot on the men's senior freestyle national team at 65kg by capturing the title on Sunday evening at the Senior World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb.
In the finals, Diakomihalis faced Joey McKenna (PRTC) in a best of three wrestle off for the USA Wrestling Senior World Team. McKenna was Diakomihalis's opponent in the 2019 NCAA Championship finals, where Yianni won in a tight sudden victory overtime decision. In match one on Sunday, Diakomihalis gave up critical points in the closing seconds to suffer 8-7 defeat. In the second match Diakomihalis earned a solid 5-2. With a World Team bearth on the line, Yianni scorined a dominant 12-2 tech superiority victory in the third and deciding bout. He was the lone men's freestyler to rebound from a loss in match one and is one of two collegiate wrestlers to earn a spot on the team in the men's freestyle competition.
Diakomihalis defeated Luke Pletcher by tech fall, 10-0, on Saturday to punch his ticket to the finals.
He will represent USA Wrestling in Oslo, Norway at the World Championships from Oct. 2-10.
